Yale University Current Use Cases - Utilizing ManageIQ/CloudForms

#1

The following are a list of current use cases being worked on by Yale University. I wanted to let the community know about how we are looking to leverage ManageIQ/CloudForms.

  1. Self Service Individual User, Single Virtual Machine Request - Description = Any user (Students, Faculty and Staff) with a Yale network id will have the ability to login to the CloudForms Portal and request a single Virtual Machine at a time. There will be a “quota” set for how much capacity (vCPU and Memory) the user will have access to consume. The user may continue to request Virtual Machines until their “quota” is met. A budget code will be required for chargeback.
  2. Self Service Individual User, Multiple Virtual Machine Request - Description = Any user (Students, Faculty and Staff) with a Yale network id will have the ability to login to the CloudForms Portal and request a bulk of similar Virtual Machines at once. There will be a “quota” set for how much capacity (vCPU, Memory) the user will have access to consume. The user may continue to request Virtual Machines until their “quota” is met. A budget code will be required for chargeback.
  3. Managed Group Single Virtual Machine Request - Description = Users within specific groups (example Infrastructure team) will have the ability to login to the CloudForms Portal and request a single Virtual Machine for projects/users that will be managed by the IT Organization. A budget code will be required for chargeback.
  4. Managed Group Multiple Virtual Machine Request - Description = Users within specific groups (example DCSUnix) will have the ability to login to the CloudForms Portal and request multiple Virtual Machine for projects/users that will be managed by the ITS Organization. A budget code will be required for chargeback.
  5. Self Service Multiple Virtual Machine Request - Description = A user (for example a professor) will have the ability to login to the CloudForms Portal and request multiple Virtual Machine for various users. This maybe used for a Lab, training class, seminar, etc… A budget code will be required for chargeback.
  6. Self Service Free / Trial Service Offering - Description = A user will have the ability to login to the CloudForms Portal and request one or more Virtual Machines, depending on their “quota” (vCPU, Memory). They will be given a promotional code that entitles them to a predefined “quota” that they will not be charged for.
  7. Amazon AWS Service Offering - A user or group will have the ability to login to the CloudForms Portal and request/manage services that will be specifically only available within Amazon. These services include (Elastic Load Balancing (ELB), Elastic Block Storage (EBS), and Relational Database Service (RDS)). The users will also have the ability to map ELBs and EBS to EC2 instances. A budget code will be required for chargeback.

Boola boola!

Thanks for sharing this. Would any of you be interested in coming to our design summit on Oct 7 & 8? It’s mostly developer focused, but I could see you benefiting in a couple of ways:

  1. talking about your use cases with other knowledgeable people who can give feedback on your approach and
  2. learn how to extend ManageIQ, either by using the APIs or learning how to create and use content for automation
